Mike would have enjoyed spending the whole day wandering around the town and playing distinct characters. Once they escaped from the Silver’s new house, however, Maddie suggested they return to her apartment to get work done. Given how much work the two of them had to do, Mike reluctantly agreed.

They worked quickly after that, though, and got several days’ worth of work done in that single afternoon, completing the project. Mike decided they would celebrate by ordering Chinese food and bingeing The Witcher until they fell asleep. Maddie happily agreed.

“Sometime I want to try my hand at Chinese dishes,” she said as she bundled up for the walk to his house. “Authentic stuff. Maybe I should learn Mandarin and Cantonese to tour China and learn from chefs there.”

“No, don’t do that,” Mike protested at once. Maddie gave him a shocked look, and, knowing he had one chance to claw this back, he gave her an exaggeratedly sad face. “I’d miss you.”

“You could come with me.”

“Carson would miss us.”

Maddie laughed as she shoved her feet into boots. “If you’re worried about him, we should invite him to dinner. You’ve been obsessing over this Ned Vande case all day, anyway.”

“I have not.”

“Have too.”

“Have not.”

Maddie bumped Mike with her shoulder, giggling. “Oh, so we’re being immature today, are we?”

“Can’t be mature with a fried brain,” Mike grinned back at her, but it was to cover up the sudden knot in his stomach.

Between what Maddie had said this morning and all the hints she had been dropping throughout the day, he was worried that she was getting ready to pull up stakes here. He’d gotten very comfortable with the rhythm of their work, their partnership with ghostwriting and self-publishing.

He wasn’t sure how difficult it would become to continue if he didn’t have her excitement to fall back on. And worse, if she moved away, Coeur D’Alene might end up drab and boring. He loved this place. He loved being on the edge of the giant lake and being so close to places like Spokane and far enough away that he didn’t feel suffocated by the city.

But what he really liked was having such close friends. Yes, he’d stay a good friend to Carson, but it wouldn’t be the same without Maddie around.

He cleared his throat, shaking off those thoughts. Maybe it would be best to have Carson join them tonight, after all. It meant Maddie would avoid talking about all this moving stuff, at least.

He sent Carson a text and got one in reply, agreeing to the plan.

“You ever get the feeling that he only tags along with these sorts of things because he’s worried we’ll end up hurting ourselves?” Maddie asked once they were headed out of the apartment.

“Huh? No, I think he enjoys hanging out with us. It gives him that parental feeling without feeling responsible,” Mike shrugged.

“I suppose, yeah.”

She was quiet as they walked to the cul-de-sac. Carson was already waiting for them in his police cruiser. Even though he was
